Are you curious about what draws a person to become a full-time magician?

Weirdo is the fascinating world premiere for Perth based professional magician Robbie T. In it he cleverly weaves childhood memories, though old photos, diary entries, and even his toy elephant, Ellie, to illustrate his transformation ‘from socially awkward to utterly inept’.

This debut is a very personal, endearing and novel concept for a theatrical cabaret and illusion show, it was the second night and the audience loved it.

Robbie T has already established a solid Perth following through his popular magic and illusion acts in the corporate sector and there were quite a few fans in the crowded room upstairs at the Ibis Palace last night, excited to see him.

He has an interesting sense of humour, quick-witted, although a little odd. He is self-deprecating, charming and easily engaged participants to assist him in his acts.

It was very interactive and amusing with lots of ticks and illusions using random volunteers, and even their own items. Robbie T is well spoken and easy to listen to, drawing in the audience with a dramatic whisper, making the show feel intimate and special.

The set was minimal, well-lit with good visibility and comfortable chairs. I really enjoyed the sound effects and music, a little quirky and fun. Although there were a few minor glitches with AV at times, it didn’t matter, Robbie T included it as part of the show.

Weirdo was interesting, clever and good value. It was sophisticated, a little bizarre and definitely aimed at adults, not children, despite the 6 pm time slot.

There was some minor swearing I actually found quite charming, and one trick involving swallowing needles that was a little gruesome, apart from that nothing offensive.

The magic in Weirdo is sophisticated and includes psychic illusions with lots of unexpected twists. It is well thought out and executed.

There are some big surprises at the end when he ties things together. I can’t tell you what he does but it’s impressive. It’s not what you think…Try and see it.

Love the show? Have your say!
