My Greatest Period Ever

Given the show’s title, it was no surprise that it was a fairly oestrogen-dominant crowd that, fittingly, filled the big red tent, but there were a few xy chromosomes in the house, so well done, men.
One of whom was Lucy Peach’s husband, Richard, whose gorgeous live illustrations accompanied his wife’s storytelling to not only create a colourful backdrop, but provide movement and momentum to the menstrual memes. Given a mic (for the first time, apparently) tonight, within a few minutes he’d almost lost his right to have a mic. “I won’t be getting one tomorrow,” he quips.
While it was self-explanatory what the show was going to be about, I wasn’t sure how it was going to be “managed”.
Freo-based singer-songwriter Lucy Peach invited us into her womb for an hour of menstruation education (menstrucation?) and melody.
Part-educator and advocate for “the power of the period”, part-sassy folk songstress and part downright ‘larious, Lucy took the audience through the four stages of the menstrual cycle.
Managing to be informative and funny, blending (genuinely) fun facts with beautiful vocals, and of course, audience participation.
The audience members were invited to raise their hands at each stage of the cycle, and a lucky audience member was awarded with the respective ‘cape’ (all fabulous!) and chocolate to get through their phase.
When she was in the ‘expressive phase’ and sang Be So Good to her husband, sheesh, the emosh… was almost too much for some, her hubs included, who appeared to be tearing up… or was that part of the storyline? I think not. As she sang so emotively, directly to him, he looked back with such love. Naw.
Super funny and very entertaining and engaging, who knew menstruation could be so fun?!
It’s a fab night out with the girls, but not necessarily just for the gals. You boys might learn something too!
Passionate and empowering, I don’t know if it was my greatest period ever, but it certainly provided a new way of riding the rollercoaster of emotions our monthly visitor brings with her.
