Michael Griffiths: Songs By Kylie

Michael Griffiths may just be one of Australia’s finest and most charming cabaret performers.

The singer has an incredible ability to capture the essence of his chameleon subjects from Madonna, Annie Lennox to Peter Allen with intelligence and authenticity.

This year he does it again focussing on Australian royalty, our darling pop princess Kylie Minogue.

Coming out on stage with all the flair and sparkle as the two massive disco balls that hang on either side of the stage, Griffiths, a Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts alum, takes us through the illustrious career of Kylie Minogue.

From her days in Neighbours, her naive start in the music business, her metamorphosis into womanhood and succeeding in the face of adversity.

Performing in first-person, Griffiths cheekily captures the fun, beautiful side of the ultimate girl-next-door using a simple stage setup, keyboard and backing tracks.

Importantly the songs are also all here, reminding us all how incredibly infectious and memorable many of her hits were.

Griffiths, showing off his skills in arrangement and composition has modified some of the songs to suit his delivery and it still works an absolute treat, often giving the songs another layer of meaning not first apparent whilst hitting all the emotional beats needed.

Initially, the crowd was a little tentative, but Griffiths astutely broke the ice with a well-placed duet and from there it was impossible not to be caught up in the revelry.

Griffiths, as the most unlikely image of Kylie, invites the audience into his world with a sharp eye and his impeccable and often hilarious wit.

For Kylie and pop fans, this show is especially for you.

However, this is not just a show for Kylie lovers.

Anyone who wants to smile bright, laugh loud and just feel fabulous for an hour will fall under its spell cast by one of FRINGE WORLD’s most accomplished and talented cabaret performers.
