Matt Storer – Living the Daydream

Matt-Storer-Living-the-Daydream

Matt Storer is going to be a star. His precision word play is showcased in original songs, sung at the keyboard and it is these ditties that are the strength of his latest show, Living the Daydream.

The chorus and verse delivered during his stand up set, are gems of Millennial angst. Think along the lines of dating, using emojis and checking your privilege. The lyrics are tight with pop culture references and playful twists on word meanings.

In between these musical breakouts, Storer’s stand up is at its best when recounting observations from his own life experience. Stories about girlfriends, standing on queue at the cinema and dealing with friends are delivered with genuine glee and clear insight.

Just like in his songs, he peppers the anecdotes with clever puns and idioms. Listen out for sly use of everyday phrases out of context.

The Daydream element of Living the Daydream is a sporadic conversation between Storer and his own subconscious. Used as a vehicle to introduce some more fantastical narrative to the set, it plays out a little like ventriloquism, thankfully without the creepy puppet. It’s maybe the least essential part of the set but does provide some silly laughs.

It’s a treat to see a local comedian firmly on the fast track to comedy stardom. Storer’s mastery of English is a foundation to being able to relay any experience with bon mot.

In the coming years, with a renewed focus on the heroes of the set – songs and word play – Perth audiences will have to learn to share this comic with the rest of the world. In the mean time, now is your chance to enjoy Storer’s wit while it can still reference Rick Ardon.

Living the Daydream is playing Upstairs at Rosie O’Grady’s until 16 February, at The Balmoral on 18 February and 23-24 February at The Sail and Anchor.

This is Amber’s second year as a FRINGE WORLD reviewer, and she manages to suppress the urge to shout I’M BACK, BABY! Amber’s regular 9 to 5 is writing grown up documents for the government but her true passion is writing reviews and observations, which enables her main hobby; people watching. A long-time audience member of FRINGE WORLD, you’ll find Amber at random shows throughout the festival, not waiting for friends to get their own tickets organised. Life is too short to miss out on funny and weird!
