Marcel Lucont’s Cabaret Fantastique

Marcel Lucont’s Cabaret Fantastique is a melange of fringe oddities.
Lucont, a well-known “French” performer on the global fringe scene, sets a perfectly poised tone of aloofness and distain as he saunters into the spotlight in a white suit, black turtle neck, and bare feet.
Like a French Andy Warhol, Lucont curates an unconventional collection of artists in his nightly orbit. Each night the show will be different as hand-picked FRINGE WORLD performers appear for their unique but debatable talents.
With deadpan humour, Lucont sips red wine, rips razor-sharp insults at audience members, and introduces each act.
His ability to simultaneously enthral and shame the audience is masterful, and his raunchy sex poem and love song are delivered with deceptive skill.
Of the four guest acts of the night, Butt Kapinski (American “comedy artist” Deanna Fleysher) delivered the best performance with an interactive film noir murder mystery that paired well with a French-themed affinity for the bizarre.
Other acts included Gretel Killeen and members of her band the Gretskys, hula hoop artist Jess Love, and Card Ninja Javier Jarquin. Killeen and Jarquin performed teasers of their full-length shows that are currently on offer at this year’s FRINGE WORLD.
While the three other acts felt less focussed and inspired, the night’s hidden gem was when Lucont asked audience members to share their own obscure talents.
With a woman who meowed very convincingly like a cat and a man with hyperflexible fingers, the segment was an entertaining reminder that all of us are just one step away from cabaret with our unique party tricks.
Cabaret Fantastique’s main talent is Lucont and his exaggerated persona of French flaneur. The show’s success, however, is tenuously reliant on the guest performers for the evening.
With a line up of stronger acts, our show might have received a higher star rating. Go for the French sarcasm, but be wary that the show is only as strong as its guest artists.
