Grit and Glitter A Sideshow Comedy Western

By Amy Kapernick on 15 Feb 2018

If you’ve considered checking out a couple of shows at Fringe, this is a good one to try as it gives you three shows in one (cabaret, comedy and magic).

Donny and Frankie join forces in a western show that has it all, whip cracking, gun spinning, knife juggling and of course sequins, tassels and the occasional nudity.

While the premise of this show was good (combine talents with an overarching western theme), it felt a little forced, like they couldn’t decide what to choose and decided to do them all. I felt like they were trying a bit too hard to make it work which didn’t help.

The attempts at humour were a step past lame dad-jokes (which I do enjoy), and the ditzy, scantily clad assistant was a bit too clueless for my liking.

They had some entertaining traditional tricks, with sword swallowing, whip cracking, knife juggling and fire-twirling all thrown into the mix as we found out what it takes to join the Grit & Glitter Gang.

It was interesting to see some of the traditional tricks that are often passed over by performers these days, I can’t say I’ve ever actually seen live sword swallowing before. They also included the “Box of Death” which, luckily for Frankie, did not live up to its name this time.

The duo performed well and spent their night keeping the audience engaged and entertained, taking ample opportunity to include people with them on-stage (much to their disgust most of the time).

They made sure to bring the grit and the glitter to their performance and jazzed up a traditional western theme. An entertaining night to anyone interested in western, magic or sequins and tassels.
