Driftwood

By Laura Keenan on 02 Feb 2018

Driftwood is a magical spectacle of innovative acrobatics and contemporary dance.

A refreshingly diverse blend of body shapes, heights and cultural backgrounds, Casus Circus is a five-person ensemble whose synergy and camaraderie shine in their intricate skills and playful onstage antics.

From the beginning, the performers include the audience in their world of wonder, making eye contact and exchanging bemused looks with onlookers during especially difficult feats and faux struggles.

This relationship strengthens as the show progresses, and as a viewer you find it easy to forgive the occasional dropped juggling ball because the performers win you back the next second by trying again and succeeding.

The show’s unifying element is a simple red lampshade that appears between segments, each performer taking their turn to play with the light. It’s an intimate interlude between the high-energy acrobatics and keeps the rhythm of the show interesting.

The performers come together in duets and groups to showcase contortions and balancing acts that defy reason.

Highlights were manoeuvres resembling human jump ropes and ferris wheels, and aerial acts whose artistry and intertwining of performers held the audience in rapt delight.

A few of the musical transitions could be smoother, but the soundtrack of alternating instrumental and vocal pieces is a soulful accompaniment to the movements throughout the show.

In Driftwood, expectations are continually challenged as smaller and slighter performers take on the base of balancing acts usually reserved for taller and larger performers, and the latter perform feats of grace and agility that seem impossible for their size.

The talent and risk-taking of the performers exist in such an exquisite combination that you find yourself repeatedly holding your breath and then exhaling in awe.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of Australia’s most exciting contemporary circus groups.
