Perth’s biggest summer celebration wrapped up on February 17 after providing 31 days of amazing entertainment for hundreds of thousands of WA people.
It was an epic Festival this year with more than 700 shows across more than 130 venues – and the attendance and Box Office stats are huge! Perth sure loves its Fringe!
We can’t wait to see everyone back in 2020.
Here are our 9 most memorable moments from the 2019 Festival.
1. The Vibrant Hubs
We love seeing Perth come alive during Fringe – the hubs are positively buzzing!
People flocked to Fringe’s most popular playground the family-friendly The Woodside Pleasure Garden for a wide selection of amazing shows and chilled summer vibes, eats and treats.
The Ice Cream Factory and Fringe Central at the Perth Cultural Centre were packed with Fringe-goers each night and it was great to see Yagan Square completely transformed as a new Festival hub!
2. Talented Local Artists
WA is chock full of amazing talent – and we love getting out there and seeing them perform!
FRINGE WORLD loves them too and creates one of the biggest platforms for them to shine. It is no surprise that more than half the program this year was made up of Homegrown artists.
Audiences and reviewers have raved and we can’t wait to see more next year! Thanks to Woodside for helping to shine a light on these artists!
3. Immersive Experience
The immersive choose your own adventure/film set experience A Midnight Visit was like nothing else at Fringe this year – or any other year!
Thirty-four rooms inside the iconic East Perth Girls School were completely transformed to be the dreamscape of an Edgar Allen Poe obsessed ghost girl. It was delightfully weird, fascinating, creepy and mostly heaps of fun!
4. Free Entertainment And Show Teasers
City of Perth came to the rescue to make our Fringe Binge easier with Fringe Fridays and Fringe Sundays which both offered free entertainment!
Buskers and street performers entertained the crowds at the Twilight Hawkers Markets in Forrest Place on Friday evenings.
Then on Sundays, we got a teaser taste of a range of amazing shows in the program with Fringe Sundays at Yagan Square allowing us a preview before we bought our tickets. Great idea!
5. Super Fun Transport
Getting to and from FRINGE WORLD and between venues got so much easier – and more fun! – this Fringe thanks to Uber.
We were serenaded by Fringe musicians and dazzled by Fringe magicians who offered intimate gigs in the backseats of our Uber rides – which were decked out in hilarious ‘costumes’.
Peddle Rides were a fun and swift way to get between hubs and make sure we got to our shows on time – and they were FREE!
6. Tropical Paradise
The popular Fringe hot spot Urban Orchard in the Perth Cultural Centre was transformed into tropical Broome inspired paradise Matso’s Broome Time that was perfect for chilled balmy nights with mates.
Featuring pub rock silent disco, Fringe’s best Sunday Session and Matso’s cocktails on tap – it was a huge hit with Fringe-goers!
7. Bee-rilliant Theme
Fringe celebrates all things WA, from the amazing local talent to the beautiful Summer weather. This year it recognised native fauna with a nod to WA bees and it had all of Perth buzzing!
There were sweet bee-themed shows and activities for youngsters and cute colourful characters that popped up around town in signs and even in person at the Woodside Pleasure Garden!
8. Something For Everyone
Fringe out-did itself this year with the diverse range of shows and events that catered for all ages and tastes.
The Woodside Pleasure Garden made sure the ankle-biters were never bored during the two-week school holidays crossover with its biggest kid-friendly program yet including the enchanting FRINGE WORLD Mermaids!
The grown-ups got to play too with some adults-only programming that let us have some cheeky fun after hours like at Club Briefs and La Soiree 2019 and make some hilarious new memories with our mates.
9. Tasty Treats And Brilliant Bevvies
Food and bar vendors kept us re-fuelled with their amazing treats throughout our four -week Fringe Binge and we are eternally grateful!
In The Woodside Pleasure Garden, we got stuck into the good Greek stuff by Brika and Filos & Yiros, and the mouth-watering treats by Coconut Meat and Fish Boss.
Bao Wow and HotMamaHot kept our bellies full while the Gage Roads bar and MadFish supplied the awesome bevvies.
The Matso’s Ginger and Mango beer on tap and selection of Matso’s Dark and Stormy and Broome Mule cocktails had us coming back for more in Matso’s Broome Time while we munched on some Sauma and Street Eats treats
We lost count how much we had to eat in Yagan Square with all the options at Market Hall and the awesome food (and weekly specials) at Soul Provider’s Po-Bay Shack.
