The Innocent Pawn

It is rare to find a piece of theatre so deeply affecting. This play stayed with me for days after I'd seen it. The actors' passion for the cause is infectious, they create an immersive experience of physical theatre with surprising twists and turns. This is an important message told with eloquence. While the subject matter can be intense, it is handled with respect whilst maintaining a sense of play and humor. Whatever your standpoint on pornography, you are guaranteed a powerful and inspiring night out with this piece of verbatim theatre. The Innocent Pawn starts the conversation about our toxic culture ... Will we continue it before our society gets to checkmate?

The Empire

I was captivated from start to finish. This is a fast-paced, Netflix-style piece of theatre, unlike anything else I've seen at Fringe. For audience members looking for a bridge from film to theatre, this is the show for you. The play tackles themes of a technological takeover, and the dangers of power. Although set in a futuristic Australia, this show feels immediate and relevant to our world today. The story had me gripped on the edge of my seat, but I never could have guessed the twist at the end. Shock value 10/10.

As we sit in the theatre round of a broken down car, surrounded by screens, we’re taken through the bawdy madness that is the ‘night circus ‘.

It’s exhilarating. It’s captivating. And it’s horrifying.

A piece of theatre constructed from real events. The bold and brave ensemble handle this raw topic with incredibly fun and energy, whilst holding a grace and sensitivity. Diving through different characters, they stomp and swing from the roof in an array of mad hatter costumes that venture a 360 view of the world of pornography… our world.

This show is ahead of its time and yet it couldn’t come soon enough.

You’ll be shocked by the way some of us think, you’ll be shattered by what some of us have done, and your heart will break for our youth. Asking the question ‘what can we do about this?’ You can’t help but burst with compassion for what calls upon kindness and cultural change.

“It’s a drug that can’t be detected. It doesn’t discriminate. And its everyone you know, in some way or another.”

It’s a wild ride to feed you tears and drop you in laughter when you least expect it.

The Innocent Pawn cradles you and leads you on a collective and internal journey that stares down the beast of our own disconnect and ignorance amidst an increasingly violent world.

It’s a show for the human.

And everyone must see it… (15+)

If not for you, for the ones you love.

This is an excellent production and should be seen by all students studying Romeo and Juliet as it really brings it to life and gives the characters great depth. It makes it very relatable and helps give a lot of perspective, as well as humour. It closely parallels the play, and makes it very easy to understand and follow all the developments. It is an engaging and spirited performance that can be greatly enjoyed by anyone who has ever watched or studied the play. The acting was also exemplary and entirely convincing. Congratulations on an excellent performance.

4x4x4. Wow! I went to go and watch The Innocent Pawn last week and was amazed at the team work and energy provided by the actors. The show was thrilling, exciting, different!

The Innocent Pawn gave me so much information about the pawn industry in an interesting and fun way. It started a conversation around a topic that is usually quite taboo, and that was an amazing step forward.

I am thankful for this show, and can’t wait to go back with my friends.

This show was incredibly powerful and confronting. I would recommend this show to many people as a form of sex Ed and how to navigate around the issue of pornography in the 21st century. It's important to understand how it affects boys and girls in their formative years, and into their adult lives. Incredibly powerful, definitely recommend.

Really loved the performance - all of the actors were convincing as heck; I liked Bruce Lee a lot and found that I was kind of melting into the performance and I believed it was Bruce in front of me, same with Michael Hutchence. Really good overall

4x4x4 does a great job of covering all bases in the entertainment sector. One of their shows "The Innocent Pawn" a verbatim piece, harnesses the duality of light and dark. It poses questions asking where the human race is headed with the uprising of technology and increasingly alarming mass addiction/consumption of pornography.

The actors nudge us to connect back with our humanity and find compassion for these performers in a mostly unknown industry through grounded confessions taken straight from ex/current porn performers. The performance is high energy and relentlessly addresses the issue of humanities increasing numbness of emotion as well as our craving for more graphic material. The piece is lengthy sitting at 90 minutes long but is filled to the brim with many potent stories/personal accounts from workers inside the porn industry. The Innocent Pawn will make you question what you're allowing yourself to consume and how damaging it can be to both the watcher and performer.

i think the show was an effective way to portray a strong message relating to pornography, creating an uncomfortable feeling for men and women which i believe is a good thing because it makes us rethink about the role women and men play in the porn industry as well as the problems it causes to people.

What an amazing and energetic show, full of surprising information and emotive performances. A real eye opener on a subject many see as taboo but obviously incredibly widespread in our society. I saw it with my 19 yr old daughter and it prompted some very in depth and open conversation. highly recommended.

THE INNOCENT PAWN -
THE SECOND IN A TRILOGY, FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF ONE PUNCH WONDER.

Being part of the first show in the trilogy I knew the effect this writers work has on an audience, and I was interested to see what it’s like on the audiences side. I was quite frankly blown away. I expected a heavy show, that would be difficult to watch, but time flew past and the 90 minute run time felt like half that. It was entertaining from start to finish. Truly an enjoyable watch.

It’s a bawdy romp through this taboo subject, It manages to explore it in a way that’s fun and easy to handle. it speaks to you with empathy and encourages you to explore your personal values around the industry.

The ensemble are electric; they manage to keep you involved and present through the play, they convince you that the world they inhabit is almost desirable, only to rip that away with the reality of how damaging the industry is - to both performers and consumers. However on the night I was there, there were weak links in the ensemble that in their moments of hesitation would take you out of the performance. However these were few and far between as the rest of the cast roared along and brought you back into the world once more.

All in all, it’s some of the most powerful work from this writer/director, a passionate cry to protect women worldwide. If you care about the women in your life, and the mental health of the men, this is a must-see show. 4.5/5 stars.

4x4x4 iS a collection of four Shows. this is my review for: THE EMPIRE.

HIgh tEnsion from the moment it starts, set in a reAl time hostage situation, the empire explores FASCINATING themes Of unchecked power, hubris, what is autonomy/freedom and what is justifiable in the face of opPression. However the show is so engaging and alive you’re not thinking about That while you’re waTching, You’re just On the edge of your seat wondering who makes it out alive. The resistance gives the audience final say On wether the empire live or die in an electronic voting system. Which keeps you invested in the story, as you go back and forth on which side you’re on. its like wATching an episode of black mirror, but its Like YOU'RE actually involveD. It’s immediate, iT’s visCeral and immerSive. An Ensemble cast with great acting ACross the boArd With VIRTUAL REALITY LIVE ON STAGE its also a technically impressive show. 5 stars. What a ride.
